After getting that comfortable, supportive, and fashionable shoe, the next thing that usually comes to mind is how to protect it. Keeping your shoes clean and away from things that can damage them are ways to prolong the lifespan of your shoes. Asides from the regular wash and dry or cleaning methods used in taking care of shoes, there are other ways to clean and protect them.

Most shoes are made from materials that can easily be damaged when they come in contact with water. Materials like canvas and suede cannot withstand constant contact with water. Most of the popular shoes like Vans and Nikes are made with canvas and suede uppers. They may have rubber soles and midsoles which prevent water from getting into the shoes from the ground, but their uppers are not this equipped. They cannot stop water from getting into the shoes from above, like when it rains.

There is no way of completely preventing water from coming in contact with your shoes, so the best option is to shield them. One common option for shielding shoes from water is using a waterproof spray.

This article reviews the Vans water and stain shield, what it is made of and how it can be used to protect and prolong the lifespan of shoes.

There are several kinds of waterproof sprays. These sprays are specially designed to provide invisible shields against water and stains. One of these sprays is the Vans water and stain shield.

The Vans water and stain shield is one of the waterproof sprays I’ve used to shield my shoes. I’ve used it on my vans ComfyCrush and vans old skool. However, the results were not the same on both shoes. I noticed some differences after I applied this spray, and I have drafted them in this article.

The Vans Water & Stain Shield is a shoe spray specially created to act as an invisible barrier against moisture and stains. This invisible barrier spray can be used on footwear and accessories made from canvas, cotton, suede, nubuck, leather, mesh, or nylon.

When applied, this spray seals the surface of your shoes so water rolls off. It stops water from getting into the shoes. This will prevent dyes (colors) in the uppers from washing out when wet, leaving your shoe still looking new even after a long period of use.

The Vans water and stain shield also prevent stains. With this spray, you can easily clean off stains from the shoe. It’ll be like wiping off stains from a mirror. This shoe spray has a good goop making it perfect for preventative Shoe maintenance. Asides from using it on shoes, you can also use it on jackets, bags, and backpacks as long as they are made with canvas, cotton, suede, nubuck, leather, mesh, or nylon.

Also, it is advisable to apply this spray before the first wear of the shoe; this will provide the shoe maximum protective benefits. However, the spray will still work on your shoes if you’ve already used them.

How long does vans Water and Stain Shield take to dry?

When applied, the vans water and stain shield create an oleophobic coating on the applied areas of your footwear to aid with repelling liquids and stains. After applying, it is best to leave the shoes for 24 hours so the spray can properly settle into the shoes.

Should I waterproof Vans?

Vans shoes are not fully waterproof; however, they are water resistant. They have rubber outsoles and midsoles, which are fully waterproof, meaning water cannot get into them from the ground. However, vans uppers are made with canvas or suede, so they are not waterproof. This means water can get into them from their uppers, which will ruin the shoes. To prevent this, you should waterproof your vans shoes. Once you’ve taken proper care to waterproof them, you can use them outdoors.

Also, if vans shoes are not waterproof, getting wet will make the dyed suede and canvas vans wash out, depreciating your vans and making them look less good. So to keep those shoes looking new and fresh, you should waterproof them.

Vans Water and Stain Shield Ingredients

The Vans water and stain shield is made with silicone and fluoropolymer based and packaged in an aerosol bottle. Silicone and fluoropolymer are effective waterproofing ingredients that generally won’t leave ray marks or a permanent unpleasant smell on your shoes. These materials are unsafe to inhale, so when using this spray at home, be cautious. You could wear a nose mask to prevent you from inhaling these chemicals.

Does Vans shoe cleaner work on hats?

Vans have two formulas that are used to prevent and clean stains. One of them is the Vans wash and stain shield. As I noted earlier, the vans wash and stain shield is a shoe spray created as an invisible barrier against moisture and stains. It works on all shoes, bags, hats, jackets, and backpacks made from canvas, cotton, suede, nubuck, leather, mesh, or nylon.

The other formula is Vans Foaming Cleaning. This cleaner removes dirt and stains from vans footwear, keeping them looking new. It comes with a brush and a foamy cleaner. This cleaner is a safe and effective tool for removing stains and dirt. It works on all shoes made from canvas, suede, nubuck, leather, mesh, and nylon.

Apart from shoes, it is also effective on hats, bags, and jackets made from the materials mentioned above.

The Vans wash and stain shield and the vans foaming cleaner can be used to clean hats. While the former will help prevent stains and water from the hat (if it is made from canvas, cotton, suede, nubuck, leather, mesh, or nylon), the latter will help clean off the stains that are already on the hat.

How do I protect my white Vans?

Before your first wear and after every cleaning, you should apply a stain-repellent and waterproof spray on your white vans to protect them. This will prevent them from dirt and stains, so you don’t need to wash them often. Also, it will make them water-resistant; when water falls on them, it will just roll off without soaking the shoes. This will also prevent vans uppers that are dyed from washing off, leaving your shoe color still looking sharp and new even after a long period of use.

If your vans are not new and you want to apply a stain-repellent and waterproof spray on the shoes to protect them, you’ll have to clean them first to make the spray effective properly.

To clean your vans, get a toothbrush and use it to knock off all of the mud and dirt from your Vans. Then use mild soap and warm water to wash out stains from the upper, then rinse them with cool water.

After washing, the next thing to do is dry the shoes properly. If the shoes are wet, the spray will not work effectively on them. So allow the shoes to dry properly for about 24 hours.

Once you’ve ensured that they are properly dried, take off the shoelaces (if you didn’t while washing them) and apply the spray. Most of these stain-repellent and waterproof sprays are made with harmful substances that should not be inhaled. So when applying the spray, use a nose mask and do not stand too close to the shoes as you spray them.

Repeat the process after some time to keep your shoes waterproof and stain-repellent. Most sprays can last for two months on the shoes before another application is required. This time estimate is usually inscribed on the body of the spray bottle so check yours.

Why do Vans turn yellow after washing?

There are several reasons why vans turn yellow after washing. So many reviews claim that their vans turned yellow when they used the washing machine. So as much as you can, avoid machine-washing your vans. You could try out the cleaning method I noted above; they are safer and more effective and will not turn your vans yellow.

Also, I came across reviews that said that too much exposure to sunlight could turn vans shoes yellow. According to them, white shoes can turn yellow due to oxidation; this refers to a chemical reaction that occurs when you wash shoes and leave them out in the sun.

Lastly, another reason vans shoes turn yellow is their stain-repellent and waterproof spray. I noticed my white vans old skool became yellowish when I used the vans wash and stain shield on them. I had used it on my blue vans ComfyCrush, and they worked fine, so I thought they would have the same effect on my white vans, but I was wrong.

Most stain-repellent and waterproof sprays contain chemicals that can alter the color of your white shoes, so be careful when deciding which to use.

Can I Scotchgard white Vans?

Scotchgard waterproof and stain repellent is perfect for suede and unfinished leathers. It is specially formulated to create a barrier for water and oil-based stains. It can be used on white vans made from suede and unfinished leather. There are no reviews against the use of Scotchgard on white vans, so I guess you can try it out.

Are Vans Waterproof?

Vans are water-resistant but are not fully waterproof. They are made with rubber soles and midsoles, which will prevent water from getting into the shoes from the ground. However, their uppers are made with canvas and suede, which are not waterproof. Water can soak or get into the shoes through their unshielded uppers.
